SO, we went to the cardiologist today and...........a 1! Yay...He thinks he will grow out of it, but for now to just keep and eye on him and keep him well excersized don't let him get fat and stuff like that. Phew! Really relieved!

We have NOT seen a specialist yet, this was diagnosed by the vet who recommended that we get an ultra sound. He says he hears a little bit of a murmer and rated it about a 2 in his opinion. I love my vet to death and he made it clear that it was just his opinion I would have to see the specialist for a definate rating.

My question is does anyone else have a dog with a murmer? And do you still do activitied? weight pull? Schutzhund? Anything? I have heard they can do anything a regular dog can do. I was hoping to do Schtuzhund with him, and my vet said its still possible if you keep the dog well excersize and in good shape.

I have also heard that if it is a small one there is a chance that it can heal itself. I am not a vet, lol, but I have heard it can happen.

Hey Bullyb I don't know if it's the same case for animals as it is humans. But some babies are born with heart murmers and the close up when they get a little older. My daughter had a slight one at birth. And at about 2 she was rechecked and it was gone. This can happen. Sometimes as they grow it goes away. So I would also ask the vet about that to see if this is also the case with puppies.

SadeiBlues, it is...
When it's a level one they do have a chance of it just going away.

I'd get a second opinion to make sure the pup really has a heart murmur there are vets out there that will say things are wrong with dogs just to make you alter them. For instance I shipped a pup to va well the vet told the folks the dog had a heart murmur and should be altered. Needless to say they called me really upset. I said hold on now the parents both are health with no heart conditions before you go to the extreme please get a second opinion and if that vet says there is a murmur and gives you something saying so I'll replace that pup asap! Well I didn't hear back from the couple so called them a week later they say oh yeah sorry we got him in to the other vet and he checked out fine! They have been sending me pics weekly of him and are totally happy now. Becareful with vets!

This vet recommended a specialist not an alteration.

I understand that but my point is sometimes you have to becareful with vets and get a second opinion on things just like with the normal doctor. If your doctor said hey you need a heart transplant you go get a second and sometimes a third opinion right? I think it's excellant he refered a specialist though. I'm not saying all vets are bad just some shouldn't have a license and are more into it for the money then anything else like some other people in life are more influenced by dollar signs then anything else.

Right. I agree. Example, we ran into soeone in a nother forum that had a dog with mange and he was being treated, The woman claimed that he was hyperactive, he was a puppy! The Dr. prescribed prozac to chill him out, again he was a puppy!

Yeah i know of a dog that is now on prozac to calm down his DA but I don't know that I agree with that. Personally my feelings are this these dogs were originally bred to be DA so we can't hold that against them but at the same time you wouldn't have to worry about your dog hurting someone elses if you contained and trained the dog properly. I"m not saying training will take the DA away but it will make it easier to deal with. Some people look down on those that kennel or chain their dogs, I don't because as long as the dog is well cared for, happy and contained I think the owner is doing an excellant job! I will never log negatively on someone that chains or kennels their dogs unless the dog is neglicted, we can't all house our dogs indoors and if they hadn't kenneled or chained the dog whose to say if the next doors neighbors lil poodle would be alive sorry but seems like they are being responsible to me and itty bitty gets to live another day as we know even some of the best temperaments see lil dogs as shake toys!

I'm okay with the use of prozac in dogs. I dunno if it's the magic cure like riddalin is(sarcasm) but if it works it works. Vets have prescribing it for years. But as far is it being used to chill out a puppy, that's just stupid!

well personally I don't do meds at all unless it's to the extrem not for my kids, my dogs or myself besides antibiotics but again that's JMO. I don't know how bad off the dog is or was or whatever but I don't see drugging anything up helping cause if you miss a dose lord knows what will happen!

I've seen this oh too many times and people spend money on various meds and care for the dog but it turns out to be nothing. I think Some vets are searching for the gold mines. Just think if you would have went back to the same vet and he "TREATED it and cured it" how much you would have been out of the pocket for nothing.

NO update yet, we see the specialist in a couple weeks.
I understand that some vets are a little shady but I have had the same vet since I had my first dog at 8 years old :)

He is VERY active and doesn't seem to sleep more than a normal puppy would. So here's fingers crossed that it may just go away.
